The book really is a grimoire in all senses of the word. It provides in one place a huge amount of occult information. It's not just a huge pile of information, but a well-explained and illustrated reference book that I keep coming back to over and over again. It covers standard magickal theory, practical instructions for doing magick, basics about Pagan and Wiccan theology, and lots of other things that will interest Pagans and those interested in magick.
It isn't a book about religion as much as a book about magick. It doesn't pretend to represent a specific religious tradition. It's more like a textbook you would expect to find in a good school of witchcraft and wizardry, hence the frequent references to Harry Potter and Hogwarts. It's a book about a magickal worldview and how one can live in the world in a very magickal way.
There is a very interesting timeline of occult events in the back of the book that points out when various influential events happened and different popular books came out. Looking at something like this can be invaluable in tracing how specific ideas in the modern Pagan community were introduced and how they spread.
