With contributions and additional material from Raymond Buckland, Raven Grimassi, Patricia Telesco, Morning Glory Zell-Ravenheart, and other illustrious members of The Grey Council, here is the book Merlin would have given a young Arthur...if only it had existed. This essential handbook contains everything an aspiring Wizard needs to know. It is illustrated with original art by Oberon and friends, as well as hundreds of woodcuts from medieval manuscripts and alchemical texts-plus, charts, tables, and diagrams.

It also contains:

  • Biographies of famous Wizards in history and legend.
  • Detailed descriptions of magickal tools and regalia (with full instructions for making them).
  • Spells and workings for a better life.
  • Rites and rituals for special occasions.
  • A bestiary of mythical creatures.
  • Systems of divination.
  • The Laws of Magick.
  • Myths and stories of gods and heroes.
  • Lore and legends of the stars and constellations.
  • Instructions for performing amazing illusions, special effects, and many other wonders of the magickal multiverse.

First a small criticism: this book would have been much better if they had avoided trying to hook in to the Harry Potter fad. Fads have a tendency to fall out of fashion. The material in this book is timeless and the book will easily become a classic despite the fact that the Harry Potter references throughout will make it seem rather quaint or superficial in a very short time. If we ignore this silly mistake the book is a treasure-trove of very interesting and practical magickal information.

The book really is a grimoire in all senses of the word. It provides in one place a huge amount of occult information. It's not just a huge pile of information, but a well-explained and illustrated reference book that I keep coming back to over and over again. It covers standard magickal theory, practical instructions for doing magick, basics about Pagan and Wiccan theology, and lots of other things that will interest Pagans and those interested in magick.

It isn't a book about religion as much as a book about magick. It doesn't pretend to represent a specific religious tradition. It's more like a textbook you would expect to find in a good school of witchcraft and wizardry, hence the frequent references to Harry Potter and Hogwarts. It's a book about a magickal worldview and how one can live in the world in a very magickal way.

There is a very interesting timeline of occult events in the back of the book that points out when various influential events happened and different popular books came out. Looking at something like this can be invaluable in tracing how specific ideas in the modern Pagan community were introduced and how they spread.
