Vanatru

Vanatru also known as the 'Vanic Way' or the 'Way of the Vanir' is a path within the religion of Heathenry or Asatru which acknowledges the deities of the Vanir - Freya, Frey,Njord and Nerthus as the most important of the gods and goddesses.

Some followers of Vanatru acknowledge the other household of Heathen deities, the Aesir and some do not.

The influences of Vanatru's principal deities are as follows:


Freya
Freya is the goddess of magic, sexuality, wealth and warfare. In Vanatru she takes on many of the usual attribute of Odin - dispensing knowledge about the magical mysteries and overseeing battles. Freya's lands of Folkvang are one of the principal afterlifes for followings of Vanatru.

Frey
Frey is a god of fertility, agriculture, weather, protection and wisdom. He is Vanatru's equivalent of Thor and goes to battle giants in his boar drawn wain. Frey is a magician and is as likely to fight battles with spells from his antler wand than with any other weapon.

Nerthus
Nerthus is the earth mother and mother of the Vanir gods and goddesses. She is associated with the land and lakes are sacred to her. Her image is carried in procession at the most holy festivals.

Njord
Njord is the god of the coast, sea travelling and costal industries.
